With a strong roster of dining options, you’re sure to find whatever you’re looking for on the upper east side, whether it’s a meal composed of classic dishes, or small plates of new inventive flavors.

Tony’s Di Napoli

Tony’s has been serving up family-style comfort food straight out of Napoli since 1959. Here, find all the warmth and hospitality you’d expect from an old-school Italian restaurant, along with heaping platters of pasta, steak and chops, and eggplant parmigiana. Most entrees are made to share so be sure to bring help, especially if you’re daring enough to order the famous 16-ounce. The dining room is charming, with old-school dark wood paneling and overhead crystal chandeliers, and the restaurant seems to encourage the family banter that’s rightfully enjoyed over generous portions of delicious Italian classics.

Silver Star Diner

Silver Star is a prime example of classic American food. In true diner form, it never closes and offers everything you’d expect on a diner menu, from breakfast favorites to dinner entrees. Neighborhood locals consider themselves diehard fans of the establishment, and even though prices have soared throughout the years (as they have everywhere), you know you can still get a solid plate of pancakes, a delicious sandwich, or any other form of greasy-spoon fare you might be craving.

Serendipity 3

Kitsch is on full blast at this beloved East Side establishment founded in 1954 and known for delectable desserts, namely the internationally-renowned trademark Frozen Hot Chocolate. It’s been a favorite of many fashionable stars throughout the years, from Marilyn Monroe to Andy Warhol and erstwhile First Lady Jackie Kennedy. You might also recognize the restaurant from various films, including the 2001 romantic comedy Serendipity, or, more recently, for the stunt-y $1,000 “Golden Opulence Sundae” which is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s most expensive dessert. Taste their new line of super-premium ice cream, 65 years in the making. The decadent line includes eight fantastical flavors, inspired by the restaurant’s signature sundaes, include Frozen Hot Chocolate, Strawberry Fields Sundae, Forbidden Broadway Sundae and Outrageous Banana Split.

Tao Uptown

One of the most successful contenders of NYC’s “clubstaurant” era, the interior of Tao is instantly recognizable by its giant Buddha centerpiece. Located just south of Central Park, the uptown location is housed in what was one a 19th century stable for the Vanderbilt family. It serves up the same reliable classics as the downtown flagship, including the now world-famous spicy tuna tartare on crispy rice and the satay of miso-glazed Chilean sea bass.

P.J. Clarke’s offers traditional American pub food and burgers, but still stands out amongst the rest in the city and is not to be missed. The den of beef may be known for its burgers—including The “Cadillac” made with double-smoked country bacon and American cheese—but you won’t go wrong with steak frites, baby back ribs, or a country-style chicken pot pie either.

Elio’s

Elio’s has endured as one of the Upper East Side’s best and most storied Italian joints for decades, thanks to the buzzy atmosphere and keen sense that you never know who you might spot slurping down one of the menu’s seven different spaghettis. The place is usually crowded but you’ll no doubt fit in with the lively crowd and quickly acclimate to the familial atmosphere. Elio’s has retained much of the same charm it opened with and looks the part with wood-paneled walls and modest decor, but the food is the shining star of this New York institution.

But there are tons of things that make the place special, from the signature green-and-white tablecloths to the round fries and the pub-style selection of beers. Opened in 1972, the place has retained much of its old-school charm—and yes, it’s cash only.
