The 5 Best 30-Minute Bike Rides for the NYC Citi Biker

Take advantage of the summer sun by leaving the subway, and exploring the Big Apple by bicycle!

Not only does biking around New York City offer a healthy, cheap, and environmentally friendly alternative to public transportation it will also help you avoid those infamous subway crowds! It’s no wonder, then, that Citi Bike which offers bike rentals by the day or the hour has taken Manhattan (and increasingly, Brooklyn) by storm.

Citi Bike members can enjoy a free 30-minute session before they have to re-dock at a bike station. To help you make the most of those 30 minutes, we’ve compiled a list of the best short bike rides throughout New York.

The High Line to the Lower East Side (23 Minutes)

After exploring the High Line a 1.45-mile walking path/park that runs along an abandoned New York City railroad track hop on a bike and make your way down to the Lower East Side. This trip is only 3.4 miles and will take you around 23 minutes, giving you enough time to stop and take pictures on the way.

You’ll pass through scenic Greenwich Village, NYU, and Chinatown before reaching your destination. The Lower East Side has a ton to offer grab a much deserved snack at Doughnut Plant or take a tour at the historic Tenement Museum.

Central Park Southern Loop

Central Park is one of New York City’s greatest landmarks. The perimeter of the park spans 6.1 miles, and is one of the most-visited urban parks in the world. It’s the perfect destination for runners, picnickers, and (Citi) bikers alike.

The southern loop of Central Park is only 1.7 miles, and will take you a maximum of 25 minutes, depending on how often you stop to take pictures along the way. You’ll pass by the Central Park Mall, which boasts an iconic view thatÕs often depicted in photographs and movies. You’ll also bike past Sheep Meadow, a wide open field where people like to have picnics against the backdrop of the picturesque New York City skyline.

Hudson Park Greenway

With a dedicated bike path that runs along the west side of Manhattan, the Hudson River Greenway is an easy, scenic ride. Since the trip will only take you about 15 minutes, you can stop to take pictures without feeling rushed. Depending where you start, you can visit the American Museum of Natural History or walk around Columbia University’s beautiful Upper West Side campus.

Washington Square Park to Battery Park

Start your journey in Greenwich Village at Washington Square Park, then make your way south. This 20-minute bike ride will take you through all of historic lower Manhattan, past the World Trade Center, and finally to your destination in Battery Park. This park is located at the southernmost tip of Manhattan and faces New York Harbor for great views of the Statue of Liberty.

Upper East Side to Hell’s Kitchen

Despite what you may have seen on Gossip Girl, the Upper East Side is a quaint little neighborhood with plenty to do. Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art before making your way down to Hell’s Kitchen. You’ll be able to bike through Central Park and see Lincoln Center on this short 20-minute bike ride. Once you’ve made it to Hell’s Kitchen, you can eat, drink, and explore the west side of Manhattan.

There’s no shortage of beautiful, fun, exciting things to see in New York City so why not see them all on a bike and get some exercise while you explore the best of Manhattan?
