Dogs in NYC: Parks, Spas, and Rules

Bringing your pet along for a trip to the city? These insider tips will ensure that you and your buddy have a paws-itively good time.

Experiencing New York with the whole family (including Fido) can be an exciting adventure. The city is perfect for long strolls, playful afternoons in the park, and ample time spent exploring. If you’re traveling to the Big Apple with your cat or dog, consider these tips to keep everyone content and cared for while you take on the city.

Stay Somewhere You’ll Both Be Pampered

Make sure you and your pet get everything you need (and more) by staying somewhere that anticipates all your needs as a pet owner. The last thing you want to worry about while you’re traveling is what type of container you’ll have to feed your pet out of, or whether or not you’ll have enough treats for your stay.

Affinia offers a special VIPaws program that includes all the essentials a pet bed, dog stairs, waste bags, food and water bowls, treats, and even a map featuring walks to dog-friendly destinations around town.

Hit The Parks

New York has no shortage of sidewalks for roaming, but when your dog needs to shake a leg or roll around in the grass for a bit, there are numerous dog parks, dog runs, and off-leash areas for your pup to frolic. Sirius Dog Run, Central Park, and Carl Schurz Park are some of our favorites, but remember to bring a few waste bags along. Owners who don’t pick up after their pets could be slammed with a hefty fine.

Remember the Rules

In New York, there are a few laws to keep in mind while you’re strolling. All dogs are required to be vaccinated against rabies, and all dog owners should carry proof of vaccinations and a dog license with them at all times. Unless you’re in a designated off-leash area, keep your pup on a leash wherever you go, and make sure the lead is less than 6 feet long.

While you’re exploring the city, feel free to grab a quick bite with your pal or even take the subway or a taxi! Just make sure your pup is in an appropriate carrier while you’re traveling to and fro.

Schedule a Spa Day

If you plan to spend a few days touring around town without your canine friend, consider booking them a stay at one of New York’s many dog spas or daycare spots. The New York Dog Spa offers boarding, daycare, grooming, and training, and New York Dog Nanny even offers relaxation services such as Reiki to ease your dog’s mind, body, and spirit.

Wherever you and your pup roam in New York, follow these tips to keep your trip simple, stress-free, and most of all, fur-ociously fun.
