7 Family-Friendly Activities for Memorial Day 2017 in NYC
If you’re planning on heading to the Big Apple for Memorial Day weekend, we’ve got a fully loaded itinerary of fun activities that everyone in the family can enjoy. Memorial Day is dedicated to commemorating America’s fallen soldiers, but it’s also an opportunity for us to spend time with our families and appreciate the freedoms we enjoy thanks to the bravery of our armed forces. For those spending the holiday weekend in New York City, it can be tough to pick which of the dozens of activities and attractions are most deserving of your precious time. Luckily, we at Affinia have your back we’ve created a comprehensive day-by-day agenda to help you get the most out of your #MDW2017.
Friday
On Friday, head over to New York’s Fleet Week festivities, a seven-day celebration that honors members of the US Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps. Make a visit to the Intrepid, where you can learn about the many naval ships that US military forces have employed over the years, or sit back and enjoy screenings of military-themed movies like Top Gun. If you’re a theater lover, check out the Lower East Side Festival of the Arts, during which performers will pay tribute to all the artists who have worked and lived on the Lower East Side. There’ll be enough singing, dancing, and entertainment to satisfy any art aficionado and the festival is free all weekend long!
Saturday
Head over to Washington Square for the Outdoor Art Exhibit, where hundreds of artists proudly showcase their work each year. With pieces ranging from paintings to jewelry to pottery, there’s plenty to see and browsing is free! If you’re a music aficionado, Governors Island Rite of Summer Music Festival is the place for you. You’ll enjoy music from the world’s top composers, and the ferry ride from Manhattan to Governors Island is a scenic activity in and of itself.
Sunday
If you’re looking to relax on the beach over the long weekend, Jacob Riis Park Beach is the perfect day trip getaway. Much less crowded than the popular Rockaway Beach, Jacob Riis Beach also offers a golf course, ball courts, and a wide span of beach on which to lay out and enjoy the sun. As an added bonus, it’s accessible via public transit from Brooklyn and Manhattan. And if tickets are still available, cheer on the Mets at a good, old-fashioned game of baseball. They’ll be up against the San Diego Padres on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so be sure to check out their website for ticket availability.
Monday
The big Memorial Day parade in Queens starts at 2pm on Grand Avenue at 72nd St. This year is particularly special because it marks the 150th anniversary of the event. You can also check out the Staten Island Memorial Day Parade on Forest Avenue, or the Bronx’s Memorial Day Parade on City Island. With multiple barbecues, markets, and parades to attend, your weekend will be jam-packed with so much food and fun you won’t want to leave.
